Beware Lest You Forget to Obey the Lord

Destroy The People of Canaan
(Deut 7:1-2)

u   The nations of Canaan are…

   Mighty and stronger than you

   God is going to give you victory

u   Show no mercy

   No agreements, destroy them all!


Do Not Marry The Canaanites
(Deut 7:3-4)

u   Canaanites are idolaters

u   Do not make marriages with them

   Marriages are agreements

   They will turn your children into idolaters

   God destroys idolaters – even your children!

u   Utterly destroy their

   Altars

   Sacred pillars

   Wooden images

   Carved images


A Holy People; A Special Treasure
(Deut 7:6)

u   God has chosen you!

   You are a people prepared for God

   You are a special treasure

u   Do not follow gods who are not gods

   They have done nothing for you!


Why God Chose Israel
(Deut 7:7-8)

u   God did not love or choose you because

   You were the most numerous of peoples

u   God chose you because

   He loves you

   He keeps the promise made to your ancestors


Why Israel Should Obey God
(Deut 7:9-11)

u   God keeps His part of the covenant with

   Those who love God

   Those who keep their part of the covenant

u   God repays those who hate Him

   The disobedient hate God

   Disobedience shows a lack of gratitude


Blessings For Obedience
(Deut 7:12-15)

u   If you keep the covenant

   God will show you mercy

   God will love and bless you

u   Blessings

   You will have many children

   You will have bountiful harvests

   Your livestock will increase

   No man or woman will be barren

   No livestock will be barren

   None of the sickness or diseases of Egypt will afflict you

   God will afflict your enemies with the diseases


Do Not Be Afraid
(Deut 7:16-21)

u  Destroy all the Canaanites

  Have no pity on them

  Do not serve their gods (it is a trap)

u  Do not be afraid of the Canaanites

u  Remember God vs. Pharaoh

  The trials (ten plagues)

  The mighty hand & outstretched arm

  God brought you out

u  God will do the same to the Canaanites


The Great & Awesome God
(Deut 7:21)


Little By Little
(Deut 7:22-24)

u   God will not give the land to Israel all at once

u   God will give the land to Israel

   Gradually

   To give them time to possess it

   God will help until everyone is destroyed


Do Not Bring Idols Into Your House
(Deut 7:25-26)

u   Destroy all Canaanite idols

u   Do not covet the gold or silver on them

u   Do not bring it into your house

   You will be doomed to destruction

   Detest it, abhor it

   It is accursed!


Be Careful To Observe The Law
(Deut 8:1)

u   Be careful to observe

Every commandment commanded by God

   To live and multiply in the Promised Land

   To possess the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

u   God led you every step of the way

   To humble and test you

   To know what was in your heart

   Will you obey or disobey?

u   God taught you a lesson

u   God kept you safe for 40 years

u   God met everyone of your needs

u   God trained you to be righteous

u   Because God did this for you

   Keep the commandments of the Lord your God

   Walk (Live) in God’s way

   Fear (Respect) God


The Good Land
(Deut 8:7-10)

u   Keep God’s commands in the Good Land

u   Thank God for the Good Land

u   Be grateful and obey Him


Do Not Forget The Lord
(Deut 8:11-17)

u    God rescued you from Egypt

u    God protected you through the Wilderness

u    God gave you the Promised Land

u    Do not say “I did it”


Remember The Lord Your God
(Deut 8:18)

u   Remember God

u   God gave you the power to get wealth

u   He gave it to you to fulfill the promises

   Made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

   You are beneficiaries of the promise made to them!


If You Forget God
(Deut 8:19-20)

u   If you forget God

u   If you follow other gods

   You will die like the people you are displacing

   They followed other gods and died

   So will you!


Greater & Mightier Nations
(Deut 9:1-3)

u    Look at the nations God is destroying

u    These nations are made up of giants

u    They will not be able to resist you because God fights for you (Not by your power and might!)

You Are A Stiff-Necked People

A History of Rebellion
(Deut 9:8-21)

u  The Golden Calf

  While Moses is on Mt. Sinai

  Aaron and the people make an idol

  Moses breaks the tablets of stone

  God wanted to destroy Israel

u He pledged to start over with Moses

u Moses interceded for the people

  Spent another 40 days on Mt. Sinai

u Receiving the law

u Interceding for the people

u  Taberah – complained about travel

u  Massah – complained about lack of water

u  Kibroth-hattavah – complained about lack of meat

u  Kadesh-barnea – refused to take the land

u  Moses reminds the people of their rebellions to teach

  They tend to forget God

  They are rebellious

  They have not EARNED the Promised Land

  They are entering the Promised Land through God’s grace and mercy!

u   Walk in all of God’s ways

u   Love God

u   Serve God with all you heart and soul

u   Keep the commandments for your good

u  He chose you “above all peoples”

u  Be grateful

   The earth swallow Dathan & Abiram

u   Your eyes have seen “every great act of the Lord”

u   Because you are eyewitnesses

   Keep every commandment of God

   To be strong and possess the land

   To live in the land a long time

   The land promised to Abraham

   “A land flowing with milk and honey”

  As long as Israel serves God
